Door County is my happy place. Our family has been coming up here since my kids were toddlers. Now that they’re grown with kids of their own, they continue the traditions we’ve created.
Door County is a place for family trips with days spent on the beach or the dunes, nights at the Northern Sky theater in the state park watching musicals, bonfires, and ice cream at Wilson’s.
Door County is a place for girls’ weekends with afternoons spent browsing quaint shops and antique stores, spa days, wine and cheese on the patio overlooking the lake, and fine dining.
Door County is a place for romantic weekends in cozy B&Bs, long walks in the gorgeous state park with panoramic views of Lake Michigan, wineries, and late (kid-free) dinners.
But this week, Door County is just for me. Not because I couldn’t get anyone to join me. Quite the contrary. If I had mentioned this trip to any of my friends, they would have jumped at a girls’ trip. But school and home have been so hectic lately, I desperately needed some solitude. So I slipped away to a condo on the lake where I can read, take walks along the lake, do a little shopping, and have a spa day.
All by myself.
